Waterproofing solution for a gold mine project can be very challenging, especially when it comes to geomembrane application in a difficult climatic region such as Lapland. The Kittilä mine placed in the northernmost of the regions of Finland at about 150 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle needed protection of the tailings storage. At this location approx. 3.3 million tons of ore are extractable by surface mining and 22.6 million tons by underground mining.
The site contains adequate tailings storage areas and waste rock disposal areas for the highly contaminated waste coming from the extraction and leaching process taking place at the mine. To ensure the environmental protection of the surroundings and water more than 1.000.000 sqm of TERANAP 331 TP geomembrane have been delivered and installed on site. TERANAP 331 TP geomembrane has been specified due to the exceptional characteristics and performance to waterproof environmental protection installations.
Resistance to chemicals, to root piercing and ageing, ease of installation and suitability for difficult climate make TERANAP 331 TP the perfect solution for such a huge and demanding area.
